What is less than 2.3 % of $450,000,000,000
I just got done Christmas shopping for Sarah tonight and I am thankful that each year we have a very small budget set aside for Christmas gifts for each other, because we want to choose to bless others. But as I came home I read a post from another blog that is very telling (Simply Missional). Although our budgeted money for Christmas is still very small compared to the national average that is spent, every year since we have been married the budget has gone up ever so slightly. This year I justified it because Sarah doesn’t ever buy herself the things that she needs, let alone wants, so this Christmas was very practical (for the most part). But in reality, most people have thought about it once or twice, what do we really need anyways?
Chris Marlow at SimplyMissional.com tells us that American’s spend on average $450 Billion on presents at Christmas. Wow, that is definitely breath taking. But even more powerful, sad, and unfortunate, is it would only take 2.3 % of the money spent on gifts for ONE DAY to provide clean water for the ENTIRE WORLD
I am challenging not only myself, but each one of you to consider giving 5% of what you have spent this year on gifts and donate it to providing clean water. Let us be advocates for those who have no voice. Consider giving to Water Wells for Africa.
Let me know if you decide to take the challenge by posting in the comment section. I would love to know how the community of the church is responding!
