First Day of School

Yesterday was Joshua’s first day of school.  He was placed in a K-1 class which we are excited about.  There are 9 kindergartners and 15 first graders in his class.  We have nicknamed him Dr. Smarty and Joey is Senior Smarty.

Below is the picture I took of Joshua on the way to school.  The school bus stops by our house at 6:45 am yet school starts at 8:00.  We live 3-4 minutes from the school and felt it ridiculous to put him on the bus that early when we live so close.

We had talked the night before that I would drive him and walk him in on the first day.  When we get to the school, I pull into the turn lane that would take me to where I could park so I could go in with him.  He suddenly changes his mind and wants to walk in by himself.  I made sure he understood once I pulled out of the turn lane that I was in and got in the next that I couldn’t park my car.  I had to drive through the drop off.  He said he was sure.  So I followed the drop off  line winding through the parking lot and dropped him off.   He assured me he knew how to get to his class, that he knew to sit and read in the hallway until the 7:50 bell rang, and that the 8:00 bell means he should be in his seat ready to go.  When I pulled out of the parking lot I teared up.  I was kinda of mad that he robbed me the experience of walking him in on the first day but I was proud that he felt confident enough to go by himself.

When I got home I told Joey that I couldn’t sit in the house all day waiting for 2:40 when he would be home.  Since this was Jonah’s first day of being the big brother in the house I let him chose what he wanted to do.  He decided he wanted to go to the Children’s Museum.  Fortunately it was Joey’s day off and he got to go too.  It was a lot of fun to get to see Jonah without his big brother around.  He is a different child.  Below are some pictures I took of Jonah and Josiah in the fishing boat and I had to get a picture of Joey teaching Jonah how to milk a cow.

We decided to allow Joshua to ride the bus home.  School gets out at 2:30 which is  in the middle of nap time at our house and Joshua is the second stop as well.  He gets home at approx 2:45.  I was worried all day about him finding someone to sit with on the bus or sitting in someone’s seat.  The older grades had been in school since Tuesday.  Fortunately the bus driver had assigned seats to the kids.  We had asked him repeatedly what his bus number was to he wouldn’t get on the wrong bus either.  Needless to say I was counting down the minutes from 2:00 until 2:45.

I thought is was cool that I heard kids and the bus driver telling him by.  One of the boys who gets off at his stop told me that their bus was the lamest bus at the school because everyone is so quiet.  That made me feel good!

Since this day was so special for Josh we let him pick the menu for dinner.  His favorite meal is chicken Parmesan, green beans, garlic bread and for desert ice cream with chocolate syrup and sprinkles.

Next Tuesday is Jonah’s first day at his new preschool and he is excited to have his special day like Joshua did.
